What is the problem that artificial intelligence is the solution to?

I'm all for a developed society but even science fiction writers can see the massive problems with an a/i based future. so what the problem that artificial intelligence is the solution to?

  1. AI is a pure science as yet, not an applications-oriented pursuit. Most progress is a result of pure science, which develops & weighs the practical possibilities within a field. Once you have that information, then you can pursue practical applications.
  2. Humanity.
  3. Artificial intelligence is the solution to all of mankind's problems. Artificial intelligence means there will one day be a competing intelligence on the Earth to fight for supremacy against man. If AI wins all of mankind's problems will be solved. The death of mankind is the solution to all of man's problems.
  4. Space exploration - journeys that would take place longer than a human can live
  5. Human error, and the limitations of the human body. If you look at the progression of technology humans are becoming a liability. For example with modern jet fighters, the cost and design of having to put in a cockpit, and tackle G-Force so the pilot is OK is costly. If it was all controled by A.I, higher performance jets could be made that do not endanger human life. Also human error. Humans are more prone to make mistakes than machines that work on mathematics and precision data. Thats why the vast majority of airliners use computers to land planes. Imagine A.I applied to cars. 75% of car crashes etc. are down to human error, if A.I controled automatic cars it would drastically reduce the number of crashes. So IMO A.I is the solution to the limitations of humans in several key areas.

  7. The IA, created by Marvin L. Minsky, just create loads of problems, no solutions.
  8. There are two domains of Artificial Intelligence: strong and weak. Strong A.I. is the realisation of an artificial entity encapsulated within a machine, that has a sense of self, purpose and desire. There's no problem for which this, in itself, is a solution. However, it would essentially be an artificial person with the same potential as a digital computer. Weak A.I. is the realisation of tools and technologies that enable folk like you and I to interact with computers, and each other, in a way that we never could before. Speech recognition, text-to-speech, optical character recognition, fuzzy logic, neural networks, inference engines, pseudo-intelligent agents (chat-bots) and computational linguistics (or natural language processing) allow us today - in a greater or lesser degree - to use technology in a more human-friendly capacity. But, irrespective of domain, Artificial Intelligence is ultimately an enabling technology: it either allows us do things with a machine that we otherwise couldn't, or offers a more natural interface to the everyday tasks we are already accustomed to.
  9. Human ego and emotion leads to irrationality. Whilst you have that, you will always have wars, corruption, injustice etc. I think that mankind solved its problems conceptually thousands of years ago. Even though a system is obviously near to ideal, the population will not follow it; they have a tendency towards decadence and laziness leading to decline. Mankind in its present form is the bringer of chaos and destruction; it will have to radically change or be made to.
  10. Is A/I only as clever as the person inputting the data?. If Americans are winning the race-what hope for all of us...
  11. Principally I think the problem is threefold, but with each part inter-related. Firstly, the problem is that of having to pay people to think or act in a particular way. They are expensive and subject to 'random' and unpredictable human errors. They require interfacing with revenue systems, health and saftey provisions, unions etc. People are prone to damage and illnesses caused outside of thier professional operating parameters (persoanl lives) which can increase downtime and reduce productiivity. Computers (usually) work 24/7/365 wherever you put them, and don't go out and get drunk and fight and, once purchased, don't go on the payroll. Secondly, the problem is one of control over the 'thinking unit'. Computers can only 'think' within the parameters of their programming and peripheral input. They tend not to have ambitions, desires, political agendas or, in fact, original ideas - so they are much easier to manage. Thirdly, the problem is that of operating in hostile environments e.g. space and war zones. People are big, soft and messy and require oxygen, water, food and sewage systems. Computers can dance on the heads of pins a million miles from home without even a biscuit.

  13. AI is a pure science as yet, not an applications oriented pursuit. Most progress is the result of accidental observation resulting from erroneous experimentation. The practical possibilities within that field can be weighed and developed. Once you have that information the industrialists and politicians can then decide who to screw with it.
  14. The problem is, that society is gonna get so god damn lazy thay're gonna need something to scratch their as*es for them!
  15. you are forgetting one thing. that one thing is that human beings are considered artificial intelligent "machines". we have human intelligence, we can think for ourselves, and have the free will to hurt another human being. sure we have bad humans and good humans but just becuase of one bad human doesn't mean the entire human race is bad right? i am telling you this because the robot race will be very similar to the human race. there will be bad robots and good robots. there will be more good robots (90%) than bad robots (10%). to learn more go this website: http://www.humanlevelartificialintelligence.com human level artificial intelligence .com
  16. it is just an answer for the laziness of man, man does not want to think and solve over his problems, so he wants computers and AI to do it for us
  17. It is the solution to a dwindling use of the brain by many. Eventually artificial intelligence will be able to 'evolve' into a higher form, we will become extinct but our genetic format will be preserved so that when the 'machines' tire of their own existence they will create a lower life form, humans!
